Sending a LAN address, a VPN exit you are about to disconnect, or a random sample wastes everyone’s time. Capture the live public value from the IP lookup on the same network you use for the broken task.

Three wrong numbers in one ticket thread

A support transcript we reviewed had (1) a 10. address from
ipconfig
, (2) an address copied from a blog example, and (3) a correct public IP captured after the VPN was toggled off. Only the third matched the server logs. The first two added a day of noise.

The customer was cooperative; the instructions were vague. “Send your IP” invites every number the machine knows. Agents who mean “public source as our edge saw it” should say that explicitly—and customers who learn the phrase skip three rounds of mismatch.

What the desk is trying to do

Agents compare your report with firewall hits, WAF blocks, or geo rules. They need the source address as seen by their edge at the moment of failure. They are not asking for a biography. Precision about timing and network path matters more than fancy screenshots of every settings panel.

Say which network: home, office, phone hotspot, VPN on/off.

Say when you captured it: timestamps beat “earlier.”

Say which app failed: browser versus native client can differ under split tunnel.

Log correlation windows are short. An IP captured at 09:00 and a login failure at 11:30 may be unrelated if the user switched from café Wi‑Fi to LTE in between. Ask for a fresh capture after reproducing the error when possible.

Mistakes that sound technical but fail

Pasting output from a random generator into a ticket looks like you followed instructions if you skimmed “IP” and missed “yours.” A random IP generator produces documentation samples—not your live exit. Using a coworker’s earlier capture assumes you share an exit—you might not. Sending only a city name without an address forces the desk to guess among many customers.

MAC addresses, default gateways, and DNS server IPs never satisfy allowlist tickets. Neither does the “IPv4 Address” line from a virtual machine’s host-only adapter. If the value starts with 127. or 169.254., stop and open the browser lookup instead.

VPN honesty

If policy requires the corporate VPN, capture the IP while connected. If the app must bypass VPN, capture while disconnected and say so. Quietly testing both without labeling them produces contradictory threads.

Split tunnel is the silent killer: Salesforce in the browser uses the VPN exit while Slack uses the local path. When the desk says “we see no hits from your IP,” ask which hostname they filtered on and whether your org splits traffic by domain.

Screenshots that help versus hurt

A crop of the lookup result with timestamp visible beats a ten-page PDF of network settings. Redact unrelated tabs if policy requires, but leave the address intact—partially blurred octets cannot be typed into a firewall.

Pasting command output without context invites misread. If you run
curl
to a third-party IP echo service, name that service so the agent knows it is not an internal tool. Prefer the same lookup URL your org documents so everyone compares apples to apples.

A reply template that clears tickets faster

“Public IP from lookup while on home Wi‑Fi with VPN off at 14:05 UTC: …” Attach a crop of the lookup result if your process allows. If they also filter by region, include the city estimate from What Is My Location and note it is IP-based. Resist the urge to pad the ticket with private LAN details unless they explicitly ask for internal routing help.

When the first capture fails to match logs, do not argue—recapture on the exact network while clicking the failing button again. Desks learn to trust customers who iterate with labeled timestamps. That habit turns “public IP” from a recurring argument into a thirty-second step.

Internal IT should publish one canonical lookup URL in the knowledge base. Competing echo services occasionally return different addresses when one sits behind a load balancer in another region. Standardizing removes “your tool is wrong” debates that are really two different measurement points.

Escalation engineers sometimes ask for reverse DNS on the public IP. That is optional metadata—not a substitute for the address itself. Provide the dotted quad or IPv6 string first; attach PTR records only if the runbook lists them.

Training agents to reject 192.168/10.x replies politely saves customer shame. A one-line macro—“please paste the public IP from our lookup while reproducing the error”—cuts repeat touches more than another paragraph about NAT.

Customers who learn this once become faster on every future ticket. Agents who learn to ask for path and timestamp spend less time playing guess-the-hop with incomplete screenshots.

Send the live public IP from the same path that failed—not a LAN address or a sample from a generator.

[7

post-129","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ip-lookup-guides
["GET
